Tubal Ligation & Vasectomy

Surgical operations: tubal sterilization for women blocking fallopian tube; vasectomy for men blocking vas deferens
Effectiveness with typical use:
  • 5 out of 1000 women will become pregnant (tubal)
  • Less than 2 out of 1000 men will cause pregnancy (vasectomy)
Advantages:
  • Intended for permanent method
  • No side effects or effect on sexual pleasure
  • Low cost for lifetime protection
Disadvantages:
  • Can still transmit and pass on STIs
  • Mild bleeding right after operation
  • Rarely reconnects
Cost:
  • Tubal: $1000-$2500
  • Vasectomy: $240-$1000
