Role of Peer Recovery Supporters in Addiction Care

In-Person: Meiling Hall, Auditorium Rm. 160, 370 W. 9th Street | Virtual: Zoom

Contact: Tyler Darling (vincent.darling@osumc.edu)

Peer Recovery Supporters (PRS) are individuals in recovery that act as a role model, advocate, and motivator for others with addiction or mental health concerns. They share their experience, recovery, and hope to help individuals engage in treatment and sustain long-term recovery. This is a growing field and career opportunity in Ohio, and it is more commonly being integrated into healthcare, behavioral health, criminal justice, and other settings. These PRS are often working alongside medical providers, nursing staff, social workers and counselors, and other health professionals. Last year, OSUWMC began hiring PRS to work in our addiction medicine programs. They are the first PRS to work in our health system and have been a part of developing this new role in a healthcare setting. In this session, we will hear from PRS and clinicians who work alongside them about how they have integrated peer supporters into the care team.
