Career Wellness

The professionally well person engages in work to gain personal satisfaction and enrichment, consistent with values, goals and lifestyle. Career Wellness focuses on making decisions around a major and or career path and finding meaningful ways to use an individual’s strengths to better the community they engage in. 

Taking an Active Role in Your Career Wellness

Set career goals. Document your accomplishments, update your resume regularly and utilize online platforms such as LinkedIn and Handshake. Engage in relationship-building and networking by seeking out mentorship, attending career fairs and networking events, conducting informational interviews and more.   

Promoting Career Wellness In and Outside the Classroom 

As staff and faculty members, it is important to assist students in making decisions about their major and/or career path and finding meaningful ways to use their strengths enhance their career wellness. We can use our professional experiences to enlighten students on career paths, opportunities and professional etiquette.  

Examples of Career Wellness Activities and Promotion inside the classroom: 

  • Bulletin board with job or staff member highlights 
  • Promote the Career Closet for students to obtain clothes for interviews 
  • Review resumes  
  • Highlight campus career fairs  
  • Host a Professional Speaker Series 
  • Be intentional about relating course content to potential careers 
  • Get to know your students and their future career goals 

 Examples of Career Wellness Activities and Promotion outside the classroom: 

  • Ask the students what kind of professional development they would be interested in attending, and provide that opportunity 
  • Host mock interviews 
  • Attend Leadership Development events
  • Host networking events  
  • If capable offer to take professional headshots
